Congregational Spotlight: First Christian Church

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a small, dynamic urban congregation located just south of downtown Minneapolis in the Whittier neighborhood, and is a community of faith striving to serve all people. Their mission throughout First Christian’s history includes a long trend of giving their time and talents to serve the people who seek help.

Though First Christian Church may be small in number; t its efforts affect our community in a strong way.  As a congregation, they are engaged in our community, supporting ministries including the Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness for the last 3 years, Groveland Foodshelf for over 30 years, Feed My Starving Children, Community Emergency Service, and the DCEH Currie Avenue Partnership.

Dennis Sanders, Associate Pastor for Diversity and Mission, says, “We are one of the smaller congregations so we don’t have a direct role in preventing homelessness, but we have a big impact…it’s the small things we able to pick up that make the difference.”
By rolling up their sleeves and actively engaging in social action, First Christian Church provides items for organizations including: welcome baskets filled with essential household items for the Currie Avenue Partnership, back-to-school backpacks and school supplies to assist Central Lutheran in their school drive, continuing to work with St. Stevens to serve a monthly meal at their food shelf, and deepening the relationship with Community Emergency Services.
First Christian will continue to do a lot in the community as it moves from 1st Avenue South to Lyndale Avenue and 28th Street to a shared worship space with Salem Lutheran Church and Lyndale United Church of Christ. First Christian. “Something helpful for the congregation,” Sanders stated, “Is seeing what you can do and are able to do with its size, has done a lot…Never too small to make a difference.”
